The Arbor Day Foundation has once again honored Hamilton Township as a 2024 Tree City USA. This marks the 18th consecutive year that the township has earned this prestigious title, which recognizes its commitment to effective urban forest management.
The Arbor Day Foundation highlights Arbor Day on the last Friday of April, acknowledging communities that prioritize the preservation and promotion of healthy urban forests. To achieve Tree City USA status, a community must fulfill four criteria outlined by the Foundation: having a tree board or department, implementing a tree-care ordinance, maintaining an annual community forestry budget of at least $2 per capita, and conducting an Arbor Day observance and proclamation.
For nearly two decades, Hamilton Township has not only met these requirements but has also surpassed expectations through various sustainable initiatives year-round, including:
- Collaborating with local organizations for Clean Up events to enhance community aesthetics, while encouraging resident involvement in the Environmental Commission.
- Protecting and preserving forested areas and exploring ways to repurpose older buildings to minimize development.
- Partnering with community groups, the Mercer County Improvement Authority, and our Ecological Facility to promote and enhance recycling efforts.
The Arbor Day Foundation’s recognition of Hamilton Township as a Tree City USA for the 18th consecutive year highlights the township's unwavering dedication to fostering and maintaining healthy urban forests.
Mayor Jeff Martin expressed his appreciation for the Arbor Day Foundation's recognition, stating, "We are excited to be named a Tree City USA once again. Our commitment to effective urban forest management reflects our dedication to preserving our community's natural beauty for future generations."
This year, Hamilton Township will celebrate Arbor Day at Klockner Elementary School. Together with students, the Shade Tree Commission, and Township employees, new trees will be planted on the school grounds. Mayor Martin will also honor students who participate in the annual poster competition, aiming to raise awareness and inspire young generations to continue finding innovative ways to enhance the environment in their communities.
